YES I did just use the words “cool” and “Baptist” together. I’m declaring the reign of that oxymoron to be over because progressive, thoughtful, and imaginative Baptists are organizing some amazing things in the coming year.
The Alliance of Baptists are holding their annual Convocation in Charlotte, NC @ Park Road Baptist Church, April 17-19, 2009.
Diana Butler Bass will be a featured speaker and conversation leader. They will be introducing some new initiatives that weave together an imaginative approach to the future with a legacy of courage, activism, and openness. They are poised to do great things. You will want to check this out. You can download a brochure here: 2009_alliance_convocation_brochure
The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship is having its young leaders (Current) gathering February 23-25, 2009 @ College Park Baptist
Church in Orlando, Florida. Brian McLaren will be a featured speaker and conversation leader. This is great opportunity for this new generation of Baptist ministers to network and dream together with excellent facilitators and spiritual directors.
Stretching beyond just Baptists, but including them none-the-less, the Center for Action & Contemplation is organizing a gathering on the emerging church March 20-22 in Albuquerque, NM. Brian McLaren, Phyllis Tickle, Richard Rohr, Alexie Torres-Fleming and Shane Claiborne will be on hand for conversation. You can register here. I’ll be doing a full post on this one because Baptimergent has been invited to host a table and I will want some help on that from any of you who are interested. Stay tuned!

Whew! Is it me, or has this year been over loaded with failure, achievement, frustration, hope, disappointment, encouragement, blindness, enlightenment, opportunity, and adventure? “Intense,” is an understatement!
As I “emerge” from beneath my pile (new career, new city, unfinished projects, parenting, etc.) I am catching a glimpse of things I really want to invest my time in. Things that are going on, and things yet to happen. One thing I am eager to re-focus on is the ongoing development of this rag-tag bunch of Baptist dreamers & idealists.
In keeping with the “New Years” theme of goal-setting, i.e. resolutions. I believe we (Baptimergents) should set some goals for ourselves, both personally and collectively. Understanding the nature of our time constraints, I will be keeping my goals to one-a-piece, and encourage you to do so as well.
My Baptimergent goals are:
1. Personal = Make regular posts on this blog
2. Collective = Organize a Baptimergent gathering in 2009. (Most likely on the back of another conference.)
Do you think you can set some Baptimergent goals? If so, share them in the comment section.
